The best time of day to nap, and why it has nothing to do with lunch
Early afternoon, roughly 1pm to 3pm. That window is not about digestion. The afternoon dip in alertness shows up even in people who have eaten nothing and who do not know what time it is, which means it is driven by the body clock rather than by lunch. The reason it is the right slot for a nap is that it is the one point in the day when sleep pressure has built up enough to let you fall asleep quickly, while the alerting signal from your body clock has dipped enough to let it happen, and there is still enough of the day left that the nap does not eat into tonight.

The window, and the evidence for it
The consistent recommendation across sleep-medicine sources is early afternoon, with roughly 1pm to 3pm as the core of it. Some put the useful range slightly wider, from about noon to 4pm, and the reason for the fuzziness is real rather than sloppy: the dip moves with your own body clock, so a person who naturally wakes at 6am and a person who naturally wakes at 10am do not share an afternoon.
What everyone agrees on is the shape. There is a measurable rise in sleepiness and a fall in performance in the early afternoon, it happens to most people, and it is the easiest time of day to fall asleep other than at night.
Why it is not about lunch
This is the part I found genuinely surprising, and it is the reason the phrase "post-lunch dip" is a misleading name for a real thing.
The dip appears even when people have not eaten, and even when they do not know what time of day it is. If it were caused by digestion diverting resources after a meal, neither of those would hold. A heavy, carbohydrate-rich lunch does appear to make it worse, so food is not irrelevant, but it is aggravating something that was going to happen regardless rather than causing it.
Which matters practically. If you believe the dip is a food coma, the obvious response is to eat a smaller lunch and expect the problem to go away. It will not go away, because it is your body clock, and the useful response is to plan around it rather than to try to eat your way out of it.
The two forces that decide when you can nap
The standard framework here is the two-process model, set out by Alexander Borbély in 1982 and still the way most sleep researchers describe this. Two things are running at once.

Sleepiness is roughly the gap between them. In the morning, sleep pressure is low and the alerting signal is climbing, so you are alert. By early afternoon, sleep pressure has been building for six or seven hours and the alerting signal takes a dip. The two diverge, and the result is that you feel it.
Then something slightly counterintuitive happens. In the early evening the circadian alerting signal rises again, sometimes called the wake maintenance zone, and people often feel more awake at 7pm than they did at 2pm despite having been awake five hours longer. That is why the afternoon dip is a window rather than a slope, and why it closes.
Why the late limit is the one that matters
Most advice on nap timing frames the afternoon window as being about finding the moment you will fall asleep most easily. That is the smaller half of the argument.
The bigger half is that sleep pressure is a finite thing you have been accumulating all day, and a nap spends some of it. That is precisely why a nap works, and it is also why a nap taken too late leaves you with less pressure at bedtime and a longer time lying awake. The nap did not fail. It did its job at the wrong moment.
There is no clean threshold for this in the literature that I could find, and I am not going to invent one. The commonly used rule of thumb is to leave at least six hours between the end of a nap and your bedtime, and the nap calculator uses that figure while saying explicitly that it is a rule of thumb rather than a tested finding.
Work backwards from bedtime rather than forwards from lunch. If you go to bed at 11pm, you want the nap finished by about 5pm. If you go to bed at 9pm, you want it finished by 3pm, which makes the classic early-afternoon slot the only one available to you.
If you work nights
Everything above assumes a conventional schedule, and for shift workers the calculation is different enough that the afternoon advice does not transfer.
Two things change. The circadian dip that matters is the one in the small hours, near the low point in core body temperature, which is when alertness is worst and when waking from a nap is hardest. And a nap before a night shift is not spending sleep pressure you need later, it is buying alertness for a period you would otherwise be running on empty.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, part of the CDC, publishes fatigue training for nurses on long hours that covers this directly, including planned naps before and during shifts. It notes that the American Academy of Sleep Medicine's Standards of Practice Committee recommends planned naps before and during night shifts for people struggling with shift work, and that longer naps of two to three hours can be appropriate on shifts of twelve hours or more, which is very different from the ten to twenty minutes that suits an office afternoon.
If that is your situation, the occupational guidance is a better fit than a general nap article, and it is worth reading directly.
Choosing your own window
- Start from your wake time, not from the clock. The dip tends to arrive roughly seven to eight hours after you wake. Wake at 6am and it is early afternoon; wake at 9am and it is later.
- Notice when you actually flag. You already know when it happens to you, because it happens every day. That is better evidence about your own clock than any general recommendation.
- Then check it against bedtime. If your natural dip is at 4pm and you go to bed at 9pm, the dip is not a usable nap slot and you are better off with light, movement or a coffee rather than sleep.
- Keep it in the same place. Regularity is one of the more reliable things in sleep, and a nap that moves around the day is harder for your clock to accommodate than one that does not.
