The coffee nap: the one nap trick with a real trial behind it
Drink coffee, then immediately nap for 15 to 20 minutes. It works because caffeine takes about 20 minutes to reach you, so it arrives exactly as you wake, while the nap itself clears some of the adenosine that caffeine competes with. This is unusual among sleep tips in having a controlled trial behind it: Reyner and Horne at Loughborough gave sleepy drivers 200 mg of caffeine, a 15-minute nap, or both, then put them in a simulator. The combination cut driving incidents to about 9% of placebo. Caffeine alone managed 34%. The catch is the one nobody mentions: 200 mg is a large dose, and in my own diary late caffeine took my median time to fall asleep from 10 minutes to 21.
- Coffee first, then sleep. Not the other way round.
- 15 to 20 minutes. Long enough to help, short of deep sleep.
- It beat either component alone in the trial that tested all three.
- It has a bedtime cost. A 3pm coffee nap is still a 3pm coffee.
What a coffee nap is
Drink a coffee, lie down straight away, sleep for 15 to 20 minutes, get up. That is the whole thing. The counterintuitive part is the order, because drinking a stimulant immediately before trying to sleep sounds like the opposite of a plan.
It works precisely because of the delay. Caffeine has to be absorbed and reach the brain, which takes roughly 20 minutes. If you drink it and then nap, the nap happens in the window before the caffeine arrives, and the caffeine lands as your alarm goes off.
Why it works
Two mechanisms stacked, which is why the combination beats either half.
Adenosine clearance. Adenosine builds up in the brain across the day and is one of the signals that makes you feel sleepy. Caffeine works largely by blocking the receptors adenosine binds to, so it is competing for space. Sleep clears some of that adenosine. Nap first and there is less adenosine competing when the caffeine arrives, so the same dose does more.
Timing. The nap ends at roughly the moment the caffeine takes effect. You get the alertness benefit of the nap and the caffeine simultaneously rather than sequentially.
I want to be careful here, because this mechanism is repeated everywhere with great confidence and the honest position is that it is a plausible and widely accepted explanation rather than something the driving trials themselves demonstrated. Those trials measured the outcome, not the mechanism. The effect is well evidenced. The story about why is a good story that fits.
The trial, and what it actually measured
The study everyone means when they cite this is Reyner and Horne at Loughborough University, published in 1997. It is British rather than American, and on this specific question it is the study that exists.
Twelve sleepy participants, each doing a two-hour monotonous drive in a simulator, under different conditions: 200 mg of caffeine alone, a 15-minute nap alone, or caffeine immediately followed by the nap, against placebo.

The combination also reduced subjective sleepiness and EEG activity associated with drowsiness, and eliminated the mid-afternoon spike in incidents.
What to hold onto and what to hold loosely
- Twelve people. Small, like most simulator work. The effect size is large enough to be interesting, and the sample is small enough that I would not quote the 9% to two decimal places.
- Sleepy drivers, not office workers. Participants were selected as prone to sleepiness and put through a deliberately monotonous drive. That is a strong test of a fatigue countermeasure, not a study about your afternoon inbox.
- A simulator, not a road. A later randomised trial in the Annals of Internal Medicine (2006) looked at coffee and napping in real nighttime highway driving, which is worth reading if you want the on-road version.
- 200 mg is a real dose. Roughly two cups of drip coffee, or two espressos. Not a polite half cup.
The second benefit nobody mentions
The coffee nap is usually sold as an alertness hack. Its more interesting property is what it does to the grogginess afterwards.
The 2019 review of sleep inertia by Hilditch and McHill separates countermeasures into things you do before sleeping and things you do after waking, and the conclusion is stark: there is no clear evidence that anything reliably fixes sleep inertia once you are in it. Caffeine taken after waking may shorten the total duration, but the initial and most severe period is unaffected. Bright light showed limited effect.
Caffeine taken before a short nap is different. The review reports that it has been shown to alleviate the symptoms of sleep inertia. It is, on that reading, one of the few things that works, and it works because it is prevention rather than treatment.

How to take one
- Drink it quickly. Not sipped over twenty minutes, which defeats the timing. Cooler coffee is easier to drink fast.
- Lie down immediately. The clock you care about started when you swallowed.
- Set the alarm for 15 to 20 minutes of sleep, then add your own falling-asleep time on top. The nap calculator does that arithmetic, and my own median for falling asleep is 12 minutes rather than zero.
- Do not push past 25 minutes. Deep sleep starts around the half hour and waking out of it is the thing you were trying to avoid.
- Early afternoon is the natural slot, which is also when napping works best anyway.
If the idea of falling asleep within a few minutes of drinking coffee seems implausible, that is a fair objection and it is the main practical failure mode. In the trial the nap was an opportunity rather than a guarantee. If you cannot drop off, you have had a coffee and a lie down, which is not nothing.
The cost, including from my own data
Every article about coffee naps that I read while writing this treated the caffeine as free. It is not.
The best evidence on caffeine timing is Drake and colleagues (2013), run at Henry Ford Hospital and Wayne State in Detroit, which found that 400 mg of caffeine still significantly disrupted sleep when taken six hours before bed. The authors concluded that people should refrain for a minimum of six hours before bedtime. A coffee nap is half that dose, but it is the same substance on the same clock.
I also have a number of my own, and it is the reason I take this seriously. In a self-tracking diary I kept across the 28 nights of February 2026, nights with caffeine late in the day had a median time to fall asleep of 21 minutes, against 10 minutes on nights without. It is one person, self-estimated, and those nights overlap with other things going on, so it is a signal rather than a finding. The full distribution and its caveats are here.
What that adds up to: a coffee nap at 1pm is a sensible tool. A coffee nap at 5pm is borrowing tonight's sleep to pay for this afternoon, and the interest rate is not obvious at the time. If you already sleep badly, this is not the technique to experiment with.
Questions people actually ask
Does a coffee nap actually work?
Yes, in the trial that tested it properly. Reyner and Horne (1997) gave sleepy drivers 200 mg of caffeine, a 15-minute nap, or both before a two-hour monotonous simulated drive. The combination cut driving incidents to about 9% of placebo levels, compared with 34% for caffeine alone. It was a small study of twelve people in a simulator, so treat the exact figures loosely and the direction seriously.
Do you drink the coffee before or after the nap?
Before, immediately before. Caffeine takes roughly 20 minutes to be absorbed and take effect, so drinking it first means it arrives just as your 15 to 20 minute nap ends. Drinking it afterwards wastes the timing, and caffeine taken after waking does not help the worst part of the grogginess.
How much coffee for a coffee nap?
The trial used 200 mg of caffeine, which is roughly two cups of drip coffee or two espressos. That is a substantial dose rather than a token cup, and it carries the same bedtime cost as any other caffeine at that hour.
Does a coffee nap stop you feeling groggy?
It appears to help, and it is one of very few things that does. A 2019 review found no clear evidence that any countermeasure reliably fixes sleep inertia once it has started, but reported that caffeine taken before a short nap has been shown to alleviate the symptoms. Prevention rather than treatment.
Is a coffee nap bad for your sleep at night?
It can be, depending on timing. Drake and colleagues (2013) found that caffeine still disrupted sleep when taken six hours before bed. In my own 28-night diary from February 2026, nights with late caffeine had a median time to fall asleep of 21 minutes against 10 minutes without. A coffee nap early in the afternoon is reasonable; one in the late afternoon is borrowing against tonight.

Set the alarm properly
Fifteen minutes of sleep is not a fifteen minute timer. The calculator adds your falling-asleep time and marks the window where deep sleep starts.
